Job description:
- Lead and grow a team of 4-5 engineers building a cutting-edge data collection platform.
- Take a hands-on approach in the early project phase: solving technical challenges, writing code, and setting engineering standards.
- Build the team from scratch: hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and developing your team members.
- Run regular 1:1s, provide feedback, foster growth, and address interpersonal challenges within the team.
- Collaborate closely with other Managers to deliver value to the business.
- Communicate effectively across tech and non-tech stakeholders, translating business goals into technical outcomes.
- Continuously improve development processes and ensure the system is performant, scalable, and reliable.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support production systems and assist with critical escalations.
Desired skills & experience:
- 8+ years of backend development experience Java / Clojure (experience in Clojure is not mandatory, Java engineers eager to learn Clojure are welcome to apply)
- Proven experience as a Technical/Team Leader or Engineering Manager, ideally in fast-paced, product-oriented environments.
- Strong track record in building and managing engineering teams from the ground up.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills - you care about people, not just code.
- Experience with 1:1s, performance feedback, mentoring, and conflict resolution.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with business and technical stakeholders.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems and experience with tools like Kafka, SQS, PostgreSQL, S3, and AWS.
- A proactive mindset with a bias toward action and delivering results.
- Fluent English (spoken and written) is a must.
